Kris Door attended the University of Minnesota in the 1970s where she received undergraduate and graduate degrees in art. She received her Ph.D. from Ohio University in 1984. Her dissertation work on seventeenth-century Dutch still life painting was assisted by a Fulbright Scholarship to the Netherlands.
Kris was a Professor of Art History at the University of North Dakota until she relocated to Raleigh in 1995 with her husband and daughter. Early in 1996 she began a weekly public survey lecture at the North Carolina Museum of Art and worked with the docent-training programs in the Department of Education.
For ten years Kris continued her lecture program at the NCMA and became Director of Docent Training, as well as wearing the many hats of Museum Educator, which included outreach lectures around North Carolina, participating in teacher programs, advising on curatorial projects, and working with student groups. She retired in 2006, but maintains a close relationship with the Art Museum and her docent friends.
Following retirement, Kris has had the great pleasure of teaching every fall in the OLLI at Duke University life long learning program. Each year she designs a course where lecture time is split between Auditorium Lectures and NCMA Galleries Sessions.
