Notes on the Death of Alcestis:
Alcestis was the wife of Admetus by whom she bore a son, Eumelus, a participant in the siege of Troy, and a daughter, Perimele. So the children on either side of Alcestis are hers.
Here are two paintings by 17th century French classicist, Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) that show some of the staged classical poses that Peyron borrowed and referenced in his painting.
