Golden Mummies of Egypt; a blend of ancient cultures
Fall 2020 OLLI CLASS

Picture
, The North Carolina Museum of Art will host the exhibition, Golden Mummies of Egypt from February 13 to July 11, 2021.  This exhibition examines art created for the burial of wealthy members of a multicultural society when Egypt was part of the Greek and Roman worlds (c. 300 BCE--200 CE).

The exhibition comes from the Manchester Museum in the UK and is currently installed in the Buffalo NY Museum, both are science museums. The presentation leans into anthropology and archeology, with inclusion of 8 mummies. We will focus our attention mostly on the aesthetic properties of these fabulous objects. It is a chance for us to explore the ancient world, an opportunity we rarely have outside of the NCMA permanent collection.

Fall 2020 OLLI classes with be offered online only. So with the help of ZOOM I will give survey lectures on Ancient Egyptian Art, Ancient Greek and Roman Art and on the featured period of time when all these cultures intermingled during Roman rule. In place of our regular gallery tours, we will explore a few works via video in the NCMA galleries within the Zoom lectures.
